California highlights

The week before Christmas Eddie and I took off for a week in California, with a stop in Vegas each way. Talk about the worst week of the year to hit up California! It rained from the second we entered the state til the second we left. But despite the weather, it ended up being a really fun trip. It was especially nice after a hard first semester of grad school.

We started with the Bodies exhibit in Vegas. It was so cool- confirmed our suspicions that our sweet/salty preferences are innate. This explains why Eddie always wants milkshakes/ sweets and I always want chips/fries.

Next, we drove to rainy CA and went to El Torito Grill for dinner, which was real good.
The rest of the trip was filled with a BYU basketball game, tons of delicious restaurants, excursions to San Diego and Mexico, movies, shopping,
the famous pawn shop in Vegas, endless rain and lots of R & R.
One thing I've already learned in our short married life is vacations with Eddie are the best.
A big thank you to our parents for making the trip possible! Best Christmas gift ever~

In our BYU blue on the way to the game. our seats were smack dab in the middle of some rowdy UCLA fans. i'm a pretty loud cheerer so i didn't like them and they didn't like me- we moved at half time. we lost, but it was a really fun game to watch.

leaving the Honda Center

That night we went to the local outdoor mall, ate at bubba gump shrimp and saw the tourist with Angelina Jolie. I'm not her biggest fan, but I wanted to be her in every scene of that movie. Her outfits/hair were so perfect I loved them.

(haha in this pic we were working on our posture
which is why eddie looks uncomfortable)

we actually didn't step foot on disney property, but it was fun being so close.

we were in the car for so many hours we made sure to have the best car treats

When we realized they weren't giving student discounts to west side story Christmas week (we were so upset) we ended up at the peterson auto museum which was cool

hey dad- just an idea for a new bread van/truck :)

model T- they had tons of cool cars but this was the one
that impressed me most for some reason

on to windy & rainy & beautiful san diego

some music while we ate our gooooood mexican food

eddie found out the mormon battalion memorial was just up the street so we went for a tour after dinner. this is a really cool part of church history i didn't know much about beforehand. i loved seeing how the incredible promises the lord made to these faithful people came true in their lives. (if they would remain faithful they would never have to fight- and they didn't)

plus the building was gorgeous. i'd love to live in a sante-fe style home one day.
i love the arches, long outdoor patios, colors, roofs and high walls.

then we found these colorful shops which were so inviting! the vendors were just selling different types of souvenirs and trinkets but it was fun to wander through

i love the idea of a red door

finally! we arrived in Tijuana! haha i'm sure those of you who have been are like why would you ever want to go there? But eddie wanted to, so i was trying to be an accommodating wifey. we were only there for 3 hours-
watched some major flooding, and ate some good food.
eddie loooves real mexican food which is the main reason we went.

mmm. churros.

& since we all know eddie and I can't drive more than 5 hours before taking a break, we stopped in vegas on the way back too. we were once again trying to get tickets to a show (lion king) and once again told we couldn't get the student discount this week. lame. so we went to the gold & silver pawn shop instead. (yes, the one from the TV show!) it made eddie's whole trip. mine too once I spotted rick!

Eddie's Notes: In case you missed the news, it really did rain a ridiculous amount. It literally rained non stop the entire time. I've never seen it rain in Vegas, and it rained three days there. Luckily, I brought the perfect rain jacket that you see in every picture. The reason I mention the jacket is because Marianne tried to say I was bringing too many jackets and I needed to leave it behind (I didn't listen to her advice, and she was left sans rain jacket).

As for the candy pictured, Marianne was literally like a child in a candy store when we bought it. She must not have realized the concept of pay-per-pound candy because we spent (by we I mean Mare) over $20 on candy. I never knew that was possible. Because of the rain we went to see a movie in this really cool theater that had movie seats that moved. They had Tron in 3D and with the moving seats. The theater had a display where you could try the seats, and Mare was totally against it. It literally took me twenty minutes to convince her to a) see Tron b) see it in moving seats and c) see it in 3D. Right before purchasing tickets, a couple came out of the theater and graciously told Marianne how bad Tron was and not to waste our money. We ended up seeing The Tourist instead.

Tijuana was an experience, probably won't need to go back there any time soon. The best part was watching a bunch of people try to drive small cars thru a 4 ft deep flooded street. Most made it, a few didn't.

The car museum was actually really cool. Mare really liked it for the first hour, but by hour two she had had enough. I'd also recommend the Mormon Battalion museum. The church always has incredible historical sites. And lastly, the highlight was seeing Rick from Pawn Stars in Vegas. Trips with Mare are great because she's like me in that she plans tons of time to just relax and do nothing. The only issues include her poor concept of time when she is driving (meaning she thinks she's been driving for 8 hours when it's been 15 minutes) and she doesn't let you enjoy your iPad as a passenger.
Despite some seemingly bad luck, the trip was great.

mom & dad, beverly & ed- THANK YOU!

a learning process

tonight i was out shopping for 1 thing: a storage container to hold blankets in the family room. that's it. but then i stumbled across these gorgeous pillows that would mesh with my modern/things-don't-match-in-this-room-but-i-like-it look & be perfect on our brown leather couch. plus they were a steal. so i texted eddie for his opinion and he texted back i don't think we need them. that's a lesson i'm quickly learning in married life- a lesson i've tried to learn my whole college life but haven't succeeded yet- wants vs. needs. of course it stung a little as i put them back and left the store, because i really wanted them, but by the time i reached home i was so happy i didn't buy them. it felt so good to use willpower (or borrow eddies) when it came to buying my favorite things- things for our house. it will feel especially nice when we have to buy books for school next week. i've been thinking long and hard about resolutions for 2011, and simplify is definitely on the list. newlywed life pretty much forces you to live simply, but i want to do it by choice. tonight was a step in the right direction~

latest obsessions

we started a book club- eddie & i
we read a chapter of and then there were none every night
(prompted by one of my professor's performances in a local play)
i forgot how good this book is- it's been since 10th grade.
eddie's obsessed- he begs for one more chapter every night

we've also been real into BYU basketball.
we've watched every away game on TV and
been to most of the home games- even the 2 up at the delta center.
jimmer is a maniac- seriously, he's so good &
all over the place on the court.

belated

my mom's birthday was the day before
my huge final presentation at school.
not a great excuse, but that's why I'm days late posting it.
Happy belated Birthday, Mom!

this is my new favorite picture of her. she's so classy.

for eddie's (& my own) sake, I wish I had
less of the freak-out characteristic
and more of her relaxed, fun & laid-back personality.
maybe it will come with age?

Christmas Devotional

We watched the First Presidency Christmas Devotional tonight and really enjoyed it. I especially liked President Uchtdorf's message- I wish I could go back to Jerusalem tonight. I got very homesick for that magical city, googled "Christmas in Jerusalem" and found a story Life ran in 2008, which is where these pictures came from. They were taken just 2 weeks before I arrived! Man I love that place.

(Jerusalem girls.. don't these make your heart ache?)

I think we started a new tradition this year. The nativity set I purchased in Israel, probably my very favorite possession, will come out every year during the Christmas Devotional.

Merry Christmas!

Every light in the house is on

you guys know this country song, right?
I used to love it, but not anymore since Eddie sings it to me 5000 x a day,
reminding me to turn off the lights when I leave a room.
My argument is always "Eddie, I can see our entire house from standing in 1 spot. Chances are I'll be back in there sooner rather than later and need the light on again."
Either way, I'm trying to be conscientious of it.

...it's funny though because when he starts singing it, I usually join in and neither of us know the lyrics past this part so we make up them up every time we sing it.
I never want to forget about this.
